Amb.Ji Ping on the issue of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan
2022-08-04 00:09

Over the past few days, China has made clear its stern opposition through various channels and at different levels both in Beijing and Washington to the visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

On the evening of 28 July, President Xi Jinping spoke with US President Joe Biden on the phone.President Xi underscored that to approach and define China-US relations in terms of strategic competition and view China as the primary rival and the most serious long-term challenge would be misperceiving China-US relations and misreading China’s development, and would mislead the people of the two countries and the international community. The two sides need to maintain communication at all levels and make good use of existing channels to promote bilateral cooperation. He elaborated on China’s principled position on the Taiwan question and highlighted that the historical ins and outs of the Taiwan question are crystal clear, and so are the fact and status quo that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China. The three Sino-US joint communiqués embody the political commitments made by the two sides, and the one-China principle is the political foundation for China-US relations.

President Bidenreiterated that the one-China policy of the US has not changed and will not change, and that the US does not support “Taiwan independence”.

However, Pelosi made a visit to Taiwan yesterday. Pelosi is a leader in the US Congress, being the third-highest ranking figure in the US government, flies on US military aircraft, by no means an unofficial action. Her visit to and activities in Taiwan, in whatever form and for whatever reason, are a major political provocation in order to upgrade US official exchanges with Taiwan.

The one-China principle is a universally recognized basic norm in international relations and a common understanding of the international community. It is on the basis of the one-China principle that China has established diplomatic ties with the US and 180 other countries, including our friendly country Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In recent years, the US has claimed that it is committed to the one-China policy, but action-wise.The US has been following a strategy of using Taiwan to contain China. And based on this strategy, the US has made deliberate provocations against China on the Taiwan question. It has been pushing the envelope on China’s red lines, has been backtracking, and even blurring and hollowing out the one-China principle. It has inserted into its characterization of the one-China policy the so-called “Taiwan Relations Act” and the “Six assurances”, which were unilaterally concocted and have never been recognized and have been firmly opposed to by China. The US has also gone against its commitment of maintaining non-official ties with the Taiwan region. It has upgraded its level of contact with Taiwan and has steadily increased arms sales to Taiwan.

Resolutely safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity is the firm will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. Achieving full reunification of the motherland is a shared aspiration of all Chinese people. And the US should give up any attempt to play the “Taiwan card” and strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three Joint Communiqués both in words and deeds and to the letter.

In the world today, the trends of turbulence and transformation are evolving, and deficits in development and security are looming large. Faced with a world of change and disorder, the international community and the people around the world expect China and the US to take the lead in upholding world peace and security and in promoting global development and prosperity. This is the responsibility of China and the US as two major countries.
